We’re proud to share the launch of an exciting, forward-thinking initiative that’s transforming how we prepare individuals with disabilities for skilled careers. The Delivering Innovative Vocational Education through Virtual Reality Technology (DIVE-VRT) program is now officially underway, with recruitment open for its inaugural cohort.

Backed by a $9.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Disability Innovation Fund, DIVE-VRT brings together the power of virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and real-world workforce training to create immersive, hands-on learning experiences—at no cost to participants.

Led by Experts, Powered by Technology

This five-year initiative is led by Dr. Tammy Jorgensen Smith and Christine Hugh, MS, and integrated into LAUNCH at USF, a transition program that has supported countless young adults with disabilities. The program is being delivered in partnership with local VR specialists at VRG Learning Institute, combining academic insight with cutting-edge technology to create a transformative learning environment.

The program focuses on preparing participants—youth and adults with lifelong or acquired disabilities—for real-world success through:

  • Virtual reality simulations
  • Apprenticeships and internships
  • Job shadowing and coaching
  • Post-program job placement support

Christine Hugh, co-principal investigator and program director, shared:

“Our team is eager to see how the students engage with the technology, grow their skills, and build confidence in their abilities.”

First Cohort Focus: HVAC Industry Training

The first DIVE-VRT training cohort will run from August 2025 to April 2026, focusing on Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)—a field with a high demand for skilled workers, particularly in Florida.

Participants will gain hands-on experience and industry exposure, positioning them for long-term employment in a critical trade sector. Applications for the first cohort are open now, with a deadline of June 13, 2025.

“HVAC was selected because it represents a high-growth, high-need industry where certified professionals are urgently needed,” said Hugh.
